Complex Felt Bag - Saturday, September
25 & Sunday, September 26 10:00-4:30
We will kick off this two day workshop creating
a small piece of jewellery imbedding glass nuggets or stones
within our felt and using natural or artificial fabric for surface
decoration and texture. This will spark ideas for the bags and
get our creative juices flowing!
For our main project we will discuss the various options for
felting bags with integrated handles, multiple pockets, flaps,
attachments and shapes and also look at the various ways the
bags may be adapted to be used as handbags, shoulder bags or
backpacks. Learn how to either stitch or stick resist materials
together to create the templates and then make a sample piece
using layers of merino and C1 wool or a similar coarse wool.
This will allow everyone to see how by combining these wools
of different qualities the resulting felt will be extremely strong
and durable with a beautifully soft surface texture.
By the end of the first day everyone will have felted at least
one piece of jewellery, created the template for their bag, felted
their sample piece and be well underway with the laying out of
wool and felting of the bag.
On day two we will continue to felt and full the bags. Depending
on the complexity of the designs some participants may finish
this process earlier than others although usually two full days
is just enough to complete one of these complex bags! For those
people felting simpler designs who might finish before the end
of the workshop I would encourage them to either observe others
working, create another piece of experimental jewellery or felt
another sample to add to their workbooks.
Designing and making complex felt bags is great fun but creating
strong fabric does take a lot of rubbing and rolling so please
be prepared for some concentrated felting during this workshop!
